Uprising in Hungary
- This was an impulsive nationwide revolt against the government of the People’s Republic of Hungary and its Soviet imposed policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956.
- This revolt started as a student demonstration. Chaos commenced when a student delegation went into a radio building to voice their demands and was detained. The demonstrators outside the building demanded for the delegation to be released and were shot upon by State Security Police.
- This information was spread and disorder fell. The government fell and a new government was set up that disbanded the State Security Police
- At first the Soviets were willing to negotiate to the revolutionaries in Hungary. Then, they changed their minds and moved to crush the revolution. There was a conflict in where over 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops were killed.
- After the fighting, by January 1957, the new Soviet-installed government had fully oppressed all opposition.
